Working with a therapist to solve problems can take place on an individual basis or in a group setting, which involves all members of the family seeing a therapist. Family therapy is most often used to help treat an individual with a problem that is affecting the entire family, such as an addiction, depression, or behavioral problems. This type of counseling can also be useful for addressing family-wide problems such as conflicts between siblings, spouses, or parents and children. Family therapy can also help family members improve their communication, understand one another better, and learn healthy ways to bring the family closer.

Family Counseling

Family therapy sessions take about 50 minutes to an hour and it is often short-term. However, this will often depend on your individual needs, your family’s particular situation, and the therapist’s recommendation.

If insurance is being used, it is recommended to check if family therapy services are covered by a health insurance plan, as insurance cover services that are medically necessary only.
